Job Description – Mobile Coverage Engineer

 

Job Summary

The Mobile Coverage Engineer is responsible for the design, implementation, testing, commissioning, and maintenance of mobile communication coverage systems. The role involves coordinating with Mobile Network Operators (MNOs), rail operators, consultants, and subcontractors to ensure reliable cellular coverage that complies with project specifications, safety requirements, and regulatory standards.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan, design, and implement Distributed Antenna System (DAS), BTS, Remote Units (RUs), fibre optic networks, RF feeders, antennas, splitters, couplers, and passive RF components.
  • Prepare engineering documents including system design, method statements, installation drawings, RF calculations, testing procedures, and as-built documentation.
  • Coordinate with Mobile Network Operators on system integration, acceptance testing, and commissioning activities.
  • Conduct RF site surveys, coverage analysis, drive tests, walk tests, and troubleshooting using industry-standard tools.
  • Analyse KPIs such as RSRP, RSRQ, SINR, throughput, call setup success rate, handover success rate, ERAB success rate, and interference levels.
  • Investigate RF issues including Passive Intermodulation (PIM), interference, VSWR, feeder losses, fibre attenuation, and hardware faults.
  • Support Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT), Site Acceptance Tests (SAT), Acceptance Test Procedures (ATP), and Integrated System Testing (IST).
  • Coordinate night engineering works during MRT engineering hours, ensuring compliance with track access procedures and railway safety regulations.
  • Liaise with civil, electrical, signalling, and rail operation teams to coordinate installation activities and project interfaces.
  • Supervise subcontractors to ensure installation quality, workmanship, and compliance with project specifications.
  • Monitor project progress and prepare technical reports, progress updates, risk assessments, and engineering documentation.
  • Ensure all works comply with Authority requirements, workplace safety regulations, and project quality management systems.
  • Support fault investigations and emergency restoration activities when required.

Requirements

  • Degree or Diploma in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Telecommunications Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Experience in RF engineering, mobile communication systems, or Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS).
  • Knowledge of LTE, 5G NR, GSM, UMTS, and RF propagation principles.
  • Familiarity with RF testing equipment such as spectrum analysers, PIM analysers, cable and antenna analysers, OTDRs, and power meters.
  • Experience with RF optimisation tools such as Nemo Handy, or similar drive test software is advantageous.
  • Understanding of fibre optic systems, BTS equipment, remote radio units, and passive RF infrastructure.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings and technical specifications.
  • Good communication and coordination skills with multiple stakeholders.
  • Willingness to perform night works within MRT operational engineering hours when required.
